Hello, I just joined and wanted to see if anyone is interested in this idea:
This is about an idea a few of us had where young people from all over the world would assist indigenous people to get/have their own VPS, which would be managed in true friendship by these "associates". It would provide websites for indigenous groups and individuals who otherwise have difficulty in being online in their true representation.
I know of many small organizations and groups who have real problems with putting up websites and communicating using the internet. Using VPS, small groups of people could provide high quality service to those who need it, making it possible for indigenous people to network independently.
I'd like to set one up here on gigarank as an example. If anyone would like to collaborate on this, please let me know! If we can get a free hosting site we can use that to make a start with planning and listing all the requirements/tools etc.
The VPS could initially provide:
email addresses with a low-bandwidth web interface as well as POP and IMAP
Installation of apps such as Joomla, Wordpress etc so that less tech savvy users can still maintain their own websites.
Different levels of access depending on need and expertise, e.g. someone could run their own domain via cPanel. Users could learn also how to use these tools, and to provide services for their own communities.
Everything optimized for mobile and for low bandwidth.
We can use any number of free VPS in any number of locations, but ultimately we would want a dedicated server somewhere with our own DNS so we can point domains to it and be able to adapt quickly if one provider stops their support. We would be able to quickly move that service somewhere else.
Thanks for reading!
Andy
