I am using VPN for many years now, and for me it has become part of my digital daily routine. And although it's not the holy grail, it makes me feel more or less protected.
Basicly i started using it after a scandal surfaced that some big providers in my country admitted that they used " deep packet inspection" without notifying clients. Their explanation was that in this way they could make an inventory about bandwidth being used by smartphones and apps like whatsapp. They also added that the packet inspection only went to OSI layer 4 :

Many complaints did rise, also from politicians, about if the privacy was at stake.
In the way the providers tried to cover up it seemed more or less harmless, but basicly it's the same like the mailman delivers a letter in your mailbox, but before doing so opens it, not really reads the informations and then puts it in the mailbox...
